Bentley OpenUtilities CONNECT Edition Help

Using the Design Workspace

The Design Workspace window has a dual purpose: it displays information about the components of the active design and also provides a physical space for manipulating them. If the active design is in the GIS format, the Design Workspace serves as the graphic interface with the map window, retrieving geometries from the map and passing attribute data from Bentley OpenUtilities Designer to the GIS database.

The default view in the Design Workspace is the By Work Location view. This hierarchical view lists each path, the work locations for that path, features that have been assigned to each work location, and units that have been assigned to features and work locations.

A folder icon next to a work location or feature indicates that one or more items have been assigned to it. Folders can be opened to display design details or closed to save space. Each assigned unit, material, and custom cost is displayed with a default icon. (Information about customizing these icons is provided in a separate Administrator's Guide.)

The design information can also be organized by feature type by switching the current view.

Expanding and Collapsing the Design Workspace View

The Design Workspace view can be expanded or collapsed by using commands on the View menu. The Expand All command opens all folders to provide an expanded view of the Design Workspace. The Collapse All command closes all folders and displays only the design's top-level folder in a collapsed view.

The Expand All and Collapse All commands apply to both the By Work Point view and the By Feature Type view (see Switching Views in the Design Workspace).

To expand the Design Workspace view

  • From the View menu, select Expand All.

To collapse the Design Workspace view

  • From the View menu, select Collapse All.

Switching Views in the Design Workspace

The Design Workspace displays two different views of design information. The By Work Location and By Feature Type settings on the View menu control the display of information in the Design Workspace. The By Work Location view is the default view.

The By Work Location view shows each path of the design and the work points and spans for that path. The By Feature Type view groups the information by feature.

To switch the view in the Design Workspace

  • On the View menu of the Design Assistant, click the view you want to see (By Work Location or By Feature Type).

Editing Properties in the Design Workspace

Some properties displayed in the Design Workspace can be edited directly by double-clicking on the property. This action makes the cell editable so the value can be changed without opening the Properties dialog box for the item.

The following item properties can be edited directly:

  • Work Location-Description, Quantity (if the work location is a span)
  • Feature-Status, Quantity
  • Unit-Quantity

Keep in mind that editing the Status property of a feature will also change the life-cycle status of any units that have been assigned to the feature.

To edit a property in the Design Workspace

  1. In the Design Workspace, double-click the value that you want to change.
  2. In the box, type the new value and then press the Tab key or the Enter key or click a different area of the Design Workspace. To cancel the change, press the Esc key.
